Peanut butter chocolate kiss "KOOKIES" (The great american bake sale)

     This old-fashioned favorite was a fad during the 50's.

 
Makes 4 dozen
  • 1¾ cups all purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter-flavored shortening
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • Granulated sugar
  • 4 dozen Hershey's kisses
  1. Preheat oven to 375F (190C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugars, soda, salt, shortening, peanut butter, milk, vanilla and egg ; beat at low speed until mixture forms firm dough.
  3. Shape into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar.
  4. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet.
  5. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until golden ; remove from oven and IMMEDIATELY top each cookie with a chocolate kiss, pressing firmly (cookie will crack around edges).
  6. Cool 2 minutes, then remove from cookie sheets with spatula.
